Perusing my social media feed last night I burst out laughing at an Inauguration reference  I saw that read, “Don’t forget to set your clocks back 300 years tonight” with text overlayed on a picture of Donald Trump with a George Washington wig on.  Yes, how apt humor can be in the face of dire adversity . . .

In what may be very dark days ahead it is really, really important that we find our voice, find our causes and give our time and money to organizations we believe in.  We have what appears to be quite an incompetent administration coming into power with an agenda that seems like the Gutting of America where the only winner seems to be Big Business.

The threat of losing the Affordable Healthcare Act is a very real threat that will leave millions of  Americans uninsured without health or mental health coverage.  Ironically, those that that have relentlessly ridiculed “Obamacare” don’t realize that this is the same as the Affordable Healthcare Act and, in many cases, the same individuals are benefitting from it.  As such, this speaks to how much the public does not know and how much the conservative media can spin the truth to further their narrow agenda.

Targets of the new administration include environment protections, consumer protections, the defunding the National Endowment of the Arts to name a few . . . not to mention programs like Planned Parenthood that serve five million people each year with affordable health care that includes pap tests and breast exams, critical for cancer prevention and detection, affordable birth control, treatment for STDs, educational outreach.  While individuals demonize Planned Parenthood for performing abortions, only 3% of the services it provides are in fact related to abortions.

There is the real threat to programs that support the health and well-being of individuals who need assistance meeting their basic needs.  Then, there is the general outlook of the administration and it’s debasement of human dignity and equality.  It is the message our children will hear and have heard on high about what and who is valuable.  It is the outrageous treatment of women and minorities and attitudes that perpetuate that treatment.

For informative, intelligent news reporting you can watch Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.  For cutting humor that represents an empowered feminine view watch Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal (not for the faint of heart).   Alec Baldwin on Saturday Night Live  has boldly stood up to Trump and refused to back down from his comedic social commentary.

We need to be the change we wish to see.  Use  your voice, your energy, your money and fight back!  Call your state representatives!  March in one of the countrywide Women’s Marches.  Support organization that support girls, women, minorities, human rights, reproductive rights, environmental activism . . .

It may be a consolation to know that bets are going down related to how long Trump will stay in office before he is impeached or forced to resign.  That ought to be a small measure of comfort . . .

Out on a photo shoot yesterday, I was struck by a pair of little girl gloves that had been dropped in the snow.  Someone had picked them up and carefully placed them on a brick wall located on the path.  And so with us, we need to take care of each other and protect the future of our children, our environment, serve and help empower those who are marginalized and disenfranchised.  “Those people”  are in fact, us.

Going forward always remember to keep your sense of humor.  We are in for a real show . . .
